If you’re reading this blog post, chances are that you have used Google before. But did know about Advanced Google Searches? These hidden tricks will give your search more accurate results in less time and we’re here to provide 15 tips for making it a lot easier than ever before!
1.Exact match wording
Advanced Google Search gives you the ability to search for specific keywords and phrases like “digital marketing agency” in quotes. You can also exclude certain words from appearing, such as if you are searching for a digital marketing company but don’t want anything related to baking or advertising.
Learn about digital marketing without learning anything about social media. Simply put a minus sign (-) in front of the word or words you want to exclude, such as “-social -media” when searching for this topic on Google search engine.
2. Keyword locations
If you’re looking for something specific on the internet, Google may not be able to help. This is where a trick that can narrow down your search results comes in handy! You can specify which location you want your keyword(s) to appear in by typing allintitle: [word] or allinURL:[keyword], depending on where they are located and if it’s text only. For example, I typed “allintext:’how do animals ?” and narrowed my google searches from over 400 million pages of information just with those three characters!
If you want to be even more particular about the keywords that come up in your website, it’s possible to pick which words show up. For example, if I wanted digital and marketing to both appear on my URL but only one of them would show with text or titles then I could use “inURL:digital intitle:marketing intext: agency”
3. Similar words
When you want to find more information on a topic, it’s best not to just search for the keyword. This will only lead you back to websites with similar content and won’t help in finding new topics or sources of knowledge. Google allows advanced searching by helping filter through results based off synonyms and related words that come up when typing “related: [website]”.
4. Word definitions
If you want to know the definition of a word, simply type in “define:[word]” into Google and it will give you an exact dictionary definition. If that doesn’t satisfy your curiosity, for example if you are wondering where the term “marketing” came from or what words mean something similar but not exactly marketing like ‘promotion’ then just search “[Word]’s origin”, such as
“Etymology promotion”.
5. Wildcards
The asterisk () method is a nifty way to find what you’re looking for on Google. For example, if the song title “ * ** ***** ** ***” pops up in your search and you don’t know who sings it or which album contains that particular track, click the word “song” next to each keyword phrase from left-to-right (ex: artist name first). It will then display every possible suggestion of artists/albums containing songs with those keywords!
If there are any words or phrases throughout this passage that seem confusing because they’re too specific about something not mentioned elsewhere in this post but would be understood by someone familiar with them already, please write an explanation below.
6. Measurement Conversion
Converting between measurement units can be tricky, but luckily Advanced Google Search makes this easy. For example to convert from miles to kilometers type “convert 5 miles to km” or if you want cups converted into teaspoons then just use the formula: Convert 1 cup into teaspoons and voila! You have an answer in seconds.
7. Calculator
A google search can be used to solve a variety of mathematical problems. Whether you’re looking for the tip at your favorite restaurant, or trying to figure out how many gallons are in an Olympic pool, Google has you covered!
